About:

The mere fact that a number of employees/colleagues are gathered together to enjoy an arts based activity does not constitute a Team Building exercise.

It may incidentally achieve some progress towards such an objective but equally it may not. The element that may be missing is the challenge which must exist. The artist leading must ensure that rising to that challenge demands the involvement of all members of the group.

Booking one of our Team Building and Leadership workshops is not for the faint-hearted Training Manager because persuading employees to take part in a dance workshop can also be a challenge especially where the employees are men.

One of the first such workshops we delivered was for a media company but not for their creative staff. The attendees were in fact all engineers and I think it would be fair to say that most of them approached the workshop with some pretty strong reservations. However by the end of the session they to a man said that they had got an enormous amount out of the exercise. It would also be fair to say that the manager who had booked the exercise was exceedingly glad that she had trusted her judgement.

The challenge set by these workshops, once one discounts any reluctance to be involved in dance per se, is a creative one rather than a physical one. The challenge e is not tobecome a good dancer but to play a part in creating a piece of choreography using simple easy to learn dance movements.

The process provides almost unlimited opportunities for the people taking part to share ideas but also to demonstrate and develop leadership in what proves to be a surprisingly safe environment because almost always no one member of the group comes to it with an inbuilt advantage.
